Our Vineyard

From Reddish-Orange Silt to Abundant Grapes
Sloughhouse Vineyard is located in the Lodi American Viticultural Area (AVA), one of the largest AVAs in California. The region is “an inland area that is comprised mainly of alluvial fan, flood plain lands, and lower and higher terrace lands.” We looked up “alluvial fan,” and, frankly, the definitions were not helpful. But we can confirm that the vineyard is near but above a flood plain on higher land, thank goodness!
The Lodi AVA is sub-divided into seven smaller appellations and Sloughhouse Vineyard is situated in the Sloughhouse appellation, as you probably could have guessed. The Sloughhouse appellation is located entirely within Sacramento County, approximately 21 miles southeast of Sacramento and 22 miles north of Lodi. Soils in our small plot of Sloughhouse consist of lower vigor, reddish-orange silt, sand, and gravelly loam. If you’d like to see the silt, we can show you one of the filters in our landscaping system.
